Local ‘Dj Amarula’ an agent of her own success
Pearl Maphumulo, known as Dj Amarula, has taken the local music scene by storm.
Despite her mother disapproving of her dream of being a DJ, 23-year-old Pearl Maphumulo, known as Dj Amarula, has taken the local music scene by storm.
“My mother is a teacher by profession and she wanted me to take a white collar job. However, I took that as a challenge to ensure that I work hard and prove to her that I know what I want and I can succeed,” said Maphumulo.
She credits her friends, Nkosi Khanyile, Xolani Duma and Brain Nzuza, for taking the initiative to teach her how to mix good music and get people to dance, back in 2014.
“They really did a good job because my first gig was on television at 1KZN TV. That gig opened doors for me and even changed my mother’s mind about my career. She is now the most supportive mother I know,” said Pearl, who comes from Lindelani Township outside Stanger.

After she was seen playing on TV, she secured gigs at radio stations, including Ukhozi FM, Igagasi FM and won the 2016 Ballito Pro Battle of the DJ competitions. The 2013 Stanger South Secondary School matriculant said she enjoys playing house music, gqom and kwaito.
“When I am on stage that is when I get the best out of me and the reaction of the fans always makes me appreciate the work I do.”
She said her dream is to one day release an album and get to work with the most popular DJ’s in the country.
“Hopefully I will get there but I am well aware that I must be prepared to work hard and master my craft. I believe my work is the only agent I have that can introduce me to success.”
Maphumulo is a resident DJ at Action Bar in Shakaskraal and appears at other spots locally.
