KZN Philharmonic Orchestra opens summer season this Valentine’s Day

The four-concert season will run weekly until March 7.

Romance will blossom to the sound of sweet music brought to you by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra (KZNPO) this Valentine’s Day.

KZNPO will open its four-concert 2019 summer season on Valentine’s Day 14 February, running weekly until March 7.

The concerts, held in the Durban City Hall every Thursday start at 7.30pm and uphold the tradition of the acclaimed World Symphony Series (WSS), which launched in Durban 23 years ago.

The acclaimed young Cape Town conductor Brandon Phillips will oversee the Valentine’s Day concert on 14 February.

Opening the concert, appropriately enough, will be Glinka’s dashing Overture to his opera, Ruslan and Ludmila – a perfect choice of Valentine’s inspired music.

The opera is based on an epic fairy tale poem by Alexander Pushkin which tells about the abduction of Ludmila, the daughter of the Prince of Kiev, on the eve of her wedding, by an evil wizard – and the ensuing attempts by her three suitors to rescue her.

The poem culminates with brave Knight Ruslan finding her, rescuing her and winning her hand in marriage.

This will be followed by an exciting debut from one of Europe’s frontline new generation stars, the acclaimed young soloist Alexander Gilmann, who will give a rare account of Erich Korngold’s dazzling 1947 Violin Concerto.

Two contrasting works by Sir Edward Elgar take up the second half of the evening, his rarely performed Froissart concert overture, and his ever-welcome Enigma Variations.
