Former Salt Rock musician Majozi strums for love and mental illness with new song

Incredibly personal to the musician, the song was written for his girlfriend, Daniela Ing, who has been battling PTSD, depression and a variety of mental illnesses.

From blessed humble beginnings in 2013, former Salt Rock local Nhlanhla Majozi rocketed to the top 10 of the South African music charts in a matter of weeks after he released his début EP album Marvelous Light.

But where has Majozi been, and what has he been up to since leaving Salt Rock some years ago to pursue his music career in Cape Town?

The North Coast Courier touched base with the Mount Edgecombe born musician who first picked up a guitar at the age of 13.

Today, Majozi no longer has to play at open mic nights in Durban or Umhlanga, ever since being signed by record label Universal – and the partnership is stronger than ever with the release of a new song titled ‘Falling’.

Incredibly personal to the musician, the song was written for his girlfriend, Daniela Ing, who has been battling PTSD, depression and a variety of mental illnesses – through the song, Majozi hopes to inspire others to be there for the people in their own lives who battle with mental illness.

“This song is all about how even if I cannot do anything else to relieve the pain and uncertainty, the one thing I know I can do is always be there for her, and that is my intention from now until eternity. To consistently always show up.”

He aims to continue being an inspiration to those around him, offering to others the same support he says he always could rely on from his church community in Salt Rock.

Majozi says he is unable to put it into words how much being able to make music means to him.

He urges others to not be ashamed of being themselves and to believe they are unique.

“Embrace that, and share your ideas with the world.”

Words he lives by, Majozi quotes Quincy Jones who said: “Never be a better musician than you are a person.”

Whenever the writer’s block strikes, Majozi concludes that he relies on his inspirations from which he constantly draws.

These include Jesus, Kings of Leon, Jack Garratt, Tom Mische and Gangs of Ballet to name but a few.
