Refiloe Moahloli’s How Many Ways Can You Say Hello? recently won the SA Book Award for Children’s Books and was the overall winner of the SA Book Awards of 2021.
Sara’s first day of school is full of surprises, but the biggest one of all is that she discovers she doesn’t understand what the other children are saying and she wonders how she will make friends.
Her teacher encourages her to find out the many ways one can say hello.
This March, Refiloe brought out her sequel How Many Ways Can You Say Goodbye? which continues little Sara’s adventure of discovery into South Africa’s many languages.

Both stories are delightful rhyming prose picture books, whimsically illustrated by Anja Stoeckigt, and are fast becoming local classics.
The sweet stories are suited for children aged 4 to 7 and could be useful tools for talking about differences, making new friends, big school fears and moving schools or homes.
Both books include a downloadable narration link to Refiloe herself reading the stories, which helps if you struggle to pronounce ‘hello’ in all 11 official languages! Don’t buy the second book without reading No 1 first.
