Mothering Sunday: Period-piece porn with little narrative backing

Nevertheless, good chemistry between forbidden lovers Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) and Paul Sheringham (Josh O'Connor), make for occasionally interesting viewing.

Mothering Sunday is a languid portrayal of forbidden love, loss and loneliness set between the wars in England.

Written by Alice Birch, who is best known for her small-screen adaptation of Normal People, the film never moves out of first gear and can be achingly slow.

Nevertheless, good chemistry between forbidden lovers Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) and Paul Sheringham (Josh O’Connor), make for occasionally interesting viewing.

Still, Mothering Sunday is unable to outrun its serious undertones and does not have the subject matter to make it worthwhile.

Mothering Sunday is concerned with class and loss, but never explores them in enough depth to be memorable.

It is at its best when exploring female sexuality in a time when women were still second class citizens, but spends little time on the matter.

Add the slow narrative pace and you end up with a largely forgettable, if well made and acted film.

Rated 16 for nudity, sex and language.

2/5.
