Epic free concert series fires up Ballito Pro

Yo Grapes kicked things off, followed by the Black Lapels, Freddy L, Majozi, Desmond and the Tutus and DJ Kyle Cassim, who closed the series.

With the return of international surfing at the Ballito Pro pres. by O’Neill, so too came the return of its renowned free concert series.

North Coast residents enjoyed the opportunity of experiencing top quality house music on Thursday night.

On Thursday and Friday last week, some of the country’s best musicians performed to an adoring Ballito crowd at the new Salmon Bay site.

Three North Coast residents jumped at the opportunity to get down to Friday’s free concert.

Despite safety, noise and waste concerns, the organisers were able to deliver two top quality events with no major incidents reported.

Nonoti’s Q Twins had the benefit of local support, but did not need it with their polished performance.

On Thursday, the evening began with Battle of the DJs winner, DJ Blackzin, before DJ Merlon, the Q Twins and DJ Tira all showed off their range of performances.

DJ Tira is one of South Africa’s most beloved house performers and he showed why on Thursday night.

Friday night was equally well supported by the greater Ballito community, who arrived to see another top quality line-up.

Families, teenagers and adults filled the beach to enjoy the broad appeal of the musicians on stage.

North Coast locals were stoked to have a free concert on their doorstep.

Families enjoyed the concert too, with these two youngsters taking in Freddy L’s performance.

After the event closed at 11pm to comply with noise regulations, the over-18s enjoyed official after-parties at Good Vibes and Conchilla.

Desmond and the Tutus are regular Ballito Pro performers and the crowd returned that loyalty with huge support.

The community-first aspect of the event was reinforced when 40 volunteers from the KwaDukuza African National Congress arrived for a beach clean-up on both Friday and Saturday mornings to ensure a litter-free environment.

Members of the regional ANC volunteered to help with a beach clean-up on Friday morning.
