Nails were once one of a woman’s most understated accessories, but with the rise of nail art they have become a platform for creating a fashion and personality statement.

If you find the right nail artist, then the sky is the limit in terms of the array of colours and designs at your fingertips.

I recently visited Marshmallows Nail & Beauty Bar at Warne House in Ballito where I was treated to the work of a real artist in nail technician, Bianca Uys.

Bianca has been a nail tech for many years, and her dedication and love for her craft show.

Watching her at work was quite a sight to behold, as the art takes a very steady hand.

Tiny toucans and swaying palm leaves now dance on my peach lacquered nails.

You need to set aside about two hours to have your nails done like this – which is a hard ask for many women – but they did last a solid three weeks before I lost one in an unfortunate run-in with my car door handle in the rain. The rest lasted beautifully for the whole month.

Next I enjoyed a relexing spa pedi with gel with beauty therapist Marica Brameld, who gave an excellent massage that left me feeling relaxed and perfectly turned out toes to show off everywhere I go.

Incidentally, Marshmellows also finished third in the Best of Ballito ‘Best Massage Therapist’ category last year.

Owner Natasha Ramsamujh has put a great deal of love into her salon and the feel at Marshmallows is one of attention to detail.

I hope to return soon for a repeat experience.
