#Letter: Budget blues for struggling residents

"These increases may not appear to be too dramatic, but with the rising cost of living, they will be unaffordable to many." - Tammy Colley.

Ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley:

The municipal draft budget has been adopted and the presentations have been done across the various wards in KwaDukuza.

The proposed increases are 7% for rates, 10% for refuse, and 15% for electricity. In addition, there is also a 9.5% increase in water and sanitation.

These increases may not appear to be too dramatic, but with the rising cost of living, they will be unaffordable to many.

The latest report from StatsSA shows there has been an average increase in the price of food of 14% from March last year.

KwaDukuza municipality must revisit the budgeted increases and offer some cushioning to our residents.

The City of Cape Town has increased the rates ceiling to offer their consumers some form of respite.

If you would like to submit your comments on the budget, I urge you to so by May 8. Send to municipalmanager@kwadukuza.gov.za.
