Returning Sunshine Tour event underway at Umhlali Country Club

The SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya will continue until Friday afternoon.

Some of the country’s best golfers are currently in action at Umhlali Country Club in the annual SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya.

The first of three rounds for the Sunshine Tour event started this morning, with the earliest groups teeing off at 6.40am and already finishing their opening 18 holes.

At time of publication, four golfers were tied for first at -2, but there is plenty of golf still to be played. You can follow the live leader board here.

The Umhlali stop-off is the second in a two tournament KZN swing following the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Gowrie Farm in the Midlands last weekend, which was won by Haydn Porteous.

Defending Sunbet Challenge champion Luke Jerling finished tied second at Gowrie and will be hoping to rekindle the magic that granted him his maiden tour win last year.

Umhlali has been a friendly stop for first time winners in recent memory, as Dylan Naidoo also claimed his maiden title in 2022.

Naidoo went on to win this year’s South African Open and played in his first major at the British Open, showing the potential stepping-stone ability on offer as players arrive on the North Coast.
