Railways sweep weekend as Dawnheights claim crucial win

Dawnheights' overcame wet conditions and a reduced 23-over format to beat Umzinto.

Local cricket shone this weekend as Railways swept all four matches and Dawnheights powered to a hard-fought Promotion League win.

Railways Cricket Club (RCC) veterans were first on the field, batting against Meadowridge. Strong contributions from Zakir Munshi (63) and Trishane Pillay (37) set up a solid total of 165/5, before RCC’s bowlers dismissed Meadowridge for just 69 to seal a commanding 96-run win. Malik Awan led the attack with impressive figures of 2/8.

The RCC first XI followed with a six-wicket victory over Topham, who were sent in to bat. Excellent bowling spells from Brian Vickery (3/12) and Caleb Govender (2/19) restricted Topham to 122. An unbeaten 52 from Nirav Maharaj, supported by Rushay Premlal (27*), guided Railways comfortably to 125/4.

Linoshen Moodley scored 75 and took 2/22.

RCC’s second XI kept the momentum going, successfully chasing Newlands’ 150 with six wickets in hand thanks to key knocks from Manazar Azim (39) and Umar Jamal (36). The third team rounded off Railways’ perfect weekend with a narrow six-run win over Simplex, highlighted by a superb 75 from Linoshen Moodley, who also claimed 2/22.

Closing out the weekend’s action, Dawnheights’ Promotion XI overcame wet conditions and a reduced 23-over format to beat Umzinto.

After posting 115/9, they defended superbly with disciplined spells from Santir Bageloo (2/16) and Trynn Naidoo (2/19), supported by tight bowling across the attack, sharp fielding and two crucial run-outs.
