Journalists arrested amid violent protests over Durban mayor
Several journalists were arrested and/ or allegedly manhandled by Metro Police at the protest action outside the Durban City Hall.
Metro Police have been accused of using undue force as the protests in support of Durban Mayor, Zandile Gumede turned violent this morning, outside the Durban City Hall, Berea Mail reports.
In the melee that broke out after police used stun grenades to disperse the crowd, media crews and journalists found themselves in the middle of the chaos.
eNCA reporter, Siphamandla Goge was one of a number of media representatives who were reportedly manhandled by police.
In an interview at the scene, Goge told reporters that he suspected what had got him into trouble was that he was filming a Metro Police officer grappling with a protestor using, what he alleged was an undue force.
When police noticed he was filming he was told to stop filming and police demanded his phone which he refused to give them.
Goge was not the only journalist to fall foul of the law. Freelance journalist, Sihle Mavuso was also arrested by police during the violent outbreak.
