DON’T miss out on this year’s Pink Pot Promotion, where every plant sold in a pink pot will see a R2 donation go towards The Sunflower Fund.
“The promotion is doing very well and all nurseries belonging to SANA (South African Nursery Association) will be taking part in the Pink Pot Promotion,” said Lynn Hingham, manager at Hingham Nursery in Durban North.
The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation whose sole purpose is to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, to save the lives of those needing a transplant. The more donors on the registry, the more hope patients suffering with leukaemia and other life threatening blood disorders have of finding their one in 100 000 donor match.
It is very unlikely that this life saving donor match will be found outside a patient’s ethnic group, which means in South Africa 100 000 donors of each of the four prominent ethnic groups need to be educated and recruited.
Although it only takes two test tubes of blood to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry, it costs R2 000 to tissue type this blood sample before it can be included on the registry, which is why fundraising is essential to recruit donors. The promotion runs until 31 August.
