Continuity key for Sharks U19
NGN talks to the leading points scorer of the U19 Currie Cup, from The Sharks, Jean-Luc du Plessis.
SHARKS U19 flyhalf, Jean-Luc du Plessis has more than his fair share of sporting talent in his blood. The former Paarl Boys High sports star is not only a promising cricketer, but he is also the son of a former Springbok coach and player, Carel du Plessis whose skills earned him the nickname the Prince of Wings.
The 19-year-old has already racked up some impressive performances in this year’s U19 Currie Cup and is the tournament’s top points scorer with 102 points, with five tries, 13 conversions, 16 penalties and a drop goal. Du Plessis was instrumental in his side’s 26-22 win over the Cheetahs on Saturday, scoring a try and converting two penalties.
“The boys have worked very hard this season and we’ve really gelled well as a team,” he said. With three games of the pool stages remaining, he explains that the team’s goal is to reach the play-offs. “It would be fantastic to have a home semi-final and though the log is quite tight I’m confident we can achieve that.
“Continuity is key, we’ve now won three games on the trot and that will stand us in good stead for the latter half of the competition.” The U19 team currently occupy second spot on 32 points, while the Lions lie just two points adrift,” he said.
