Woman gives birth at Blackburn Road dentist

Locals help deliver baby after mom goes into labour at dental clinic.

THE quick thinking of a local resident, a dentist and an obstetrician helped successfully deliver a baby at a dental clinic on Blackburn Road yesterday afternoon.

According to Jono da Canha, his wife, Debbie, helped deliver the little boy with the help of an obstetrician, Dr Denis McLynn, who talked the local resident through the birth over the phone as well as dentist, Anish Maharaj and members of his staff. The dentist not only, caught the baby but he also delivered the placenta.

“My wife called me to say our domestic worker was concerned for her sister who was pregnant and had been complaining of pains and cramps. She had ended up at a dental clinic on Blackburn Road. My wife who just so happened to be on the same road when she received the call went there immediately,’ said da Canha.

“Seeing that the lady was literally ready to give birth, my wife called me back and asked me to get an ambulance there as soon as possible. I called Marshall Security who responded immediately. Amazingly, my wife called our obstetrician and had him on speaker phone, he was only too happy to help, and between him, my wife and the dentist, the baby was safely delivered. They even clamped and cut the umbilical cord,” he said.

Da Canha praised all those involved in the safe delivery.

“Way to go Marshall Security, Brad Hatfield, Debs, Dr McClynn and the amazing dentist and his staff. The baby was quite premature but was strong and mom and her boy were taken off to the hospital shortly after the birth.”
