Man drowns at Virginia Beach

The man was fishing when he fell off the pier.

A MAN drowned after falling off the pier at Virginia Beach, this morning. Maniloo Roopnarain, believed to be in his 50s is said to have had an epileptic fit while fishing. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, Roopnarain’s nephew jumped into the water to rescue his uncle.

“We believe he may have had an epileptic fit, his family were with him when he fell into the water. The incident occurred at about 5.15am today. The Phoenix resident was fishing and fell off the pier. His family have told us he was also asthmatic, however it’s unclear what caused him to fall off the pier and into the water. His nephew dived into the water to rescue him, but unfortunately it was too late,” he said.
