Councillor appeals for help following shack fire

uMhlanga ward councillor begins charitable drive for Blackburn Village Informal Settlement family.

UMHLANGA ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, has put out an appeal for help for a Blackburn Village Informal Settlement family who lost a loved one in a shack fire earlier this week.

It is believed the man was asleep when his shack caught on fire on Sunday night. According to de Boer, the man died from smoke inhalation.

“It seems he was unable to get out of the shack in time and died from suffocation. I’ve begun a charitable drive to help the family. I know it’s short notice but any assistance from the north Durban community will help.  The family needs assistance to hire chairs and a small tent, and to provide groceries to cater for those whom attend,” he said.
