Mother of uMhlanga murder-suicide incident identified

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the Durban Magistrate Court had ordered the 34-year-old woman to undergo a mental assessment.

THE woman who allegedly murdered her seven-year-old son and then tried to commit suicide at a Bed and Breakfast in uMhlanga last week Tuesday has been identified as Morningside resident, Megan Prins.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, confirmed the Durban Magistrate Court had ordered the 34-year-old woman to undergo a mental assessment. However, he could not comment on the outcome of the assessment.

He said she was being detained at the Westville Prison.

The news of the alleged incident has shocked the community.

It is believed the woman fed her son, Sloan, medication before suffocating him.

Zwane said after killing the child she allegedly tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrists with a razor blade.

The Durban North SAPS is investigating a case of murder.
