Report pick pocketing, urge police
The pick pockets pretend as though they are drunk.
WHEN a local resident took to Facebook to voice an incident in which she was pick pocketed in uMhlanga, more than 20 people commented saying they had also fallen victim in the village or knew of someone who had been targeted.
“Within the past weeks, two people that I know have had their phones stolen out their pockets at village and I’m sure many more people have had their possessions stolen in that area as well. It is the most violating and vulnerable feeling to have something stolen right off of you,” the resident wrote.
The resident claims that the criminals doing this act drunk and push against an unsuspecting person’s pockets to feel if there’s anything worth stealing.

“It happened to my son a few weeks ago. Fortunately his wife saw what happened and he managed to get his phone back,” said one resident.
Asked if they are aware of such incidents, uMhlanga Tourism said no cases have been brought to their attention.
“No cases have been reported to us. We can’t confirm nor deny such allegations as we don’t have an information on it,” said uMhlanga Tourism’s Peter Rose.

Umhlanga Tourism was not the only stakeholder to say they have no record of the incidents. Durban North SAPS spokesperson captain Raymond Deokaran said: “No cases of pick pocketing have been reported to us either. We urge victims to report the cases no matter how minor they are. Police can’t do anything unless a case is opened.”
The uMhlanga UIP also reiterated the importance of reporting incidents.
“As the UIP we will definitely look into the concerns. However public members should also make sure that they report any form of crime to the relevant structures so it can be addressed accordingly. We are currently putting measures in place to deal with the recent pick pocketing allegations,” said UIP precinct manager Dewet Geldenhuys.
Police have urged residents and visitors to report any incidents.
