Glenhill residents hope to see R5k dumping fine enforced

THE eThekwini Municipality recently charged an individual with a R5000 fine for illegal dumping following a successful clean up at the crossroads in Phoenix Industrial Park. While this move was welcomed by some, others questioned the consistency of the municipal by-laws.

Illegal dumping has been a long-standing issue for the residents of Glenhills where the problem culminates at the intersection of Ryde Place and Malacca Road where everything from construction material to paper and clothes.

“As Glenhills residents, we are upset that the authorities show very little interest in enforcing the nuisance bylaws in this area. The municipality should be fining people all over the city. There’s never been a single fine issued here. Last Thursday a whole of of stuff was dumped at the intersection of Ryde Place and Malacca Road,” he said.

Candy, who is a member of the Glenhills Ratepayers Association and chairman of Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum has been battling illegal dumping for many years.

While the residents of the informal settlement on Malacca Road have been implicated for the mass of waste scattered on the roadside, a resident who did not want to be named told the Northglen News that outsiders are dumping illegally along the road outside the settlement.

“They come here at night and dump,” they said.
