Grass cutter robbed on M4

The suspect used a firearm in the robbery.

A WORKER cutting grass on the M4 Ruth First Highway was robbed on Tuesday at about 12.30pm.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the suspects and his accomplice had stopped in the emergency lane on the M4 near the Swapo Road (Broadway) off-ramp.

“The victim had just taken a break when he was approached by one of the suspects asking for directions. The suspect then tried to grab the grass cutter and the victim tried to stop him by holding on to the machine. The suspect then pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the victim who relinquished his grip,” he said.

The victim saw the suspect jump into a silver vehicle which then sped off.

“He was so traumatised that he could not make out the make of the vehicle or the registration. We believe there were other suspects in the vehicle. No arrests have yet been made in the robbery,” he said.

The armed mugging follows a breakthrough arrest in uMhlanga last month where security nabbed a suspect linked to 10 armed muggings in the area.
