Clean-up to target Roadhouse Crescent cardboard collection site
The section where the cardboard collectors have now set up operations is just below Connaught Bridge.
ILLEGAL dumping along Roadhouse Crescent, under the Connaught Bridge, has escalated at an alarming rate in the last few months, said Durban North ward councillor, Shontel de Boer. What is more, the illegal dumping is taking place just metres away from a dump site.
According to de Boer, a clean-up on Saturday, 12 December involving various eThekwini Municipality departments, is now set to tackle illegal dumping and the general mess where cardboard collectors, who had initially set-up an informal base, operate from.
The section where the cardboard collectors have now set up operations is just below Connaught Bridge. The men collect stacks of cardboard boxes, soak them in municipal bins filled with water and then bundle them together to earn money.

“This section of Roadhouse Crescent has been problematic for years. There is a proposal from private funders to formalise the recycling site used by the cardboard collectors. However in order to do that, this area has to be completely cleared of the rubbish littered across the ground and the general upkeep of the area will have to be improved. The collectors are not the problem and they’ve reported that companies and individuals are using the cover of darkness to illegally dump in the area. I’ve arranged the clean-up with various municipal departments and have the backing of the Durban Green Corridor and uMgeni Estuary Conservancy,” de Boer explained.
The ward 36 councillor added residents and anybody who wanted to help out with the clean-up were welcome.
“If residents would like to join in, I urged them to bring gloves, we will be supplying bags,” she said.
The clean-up takes place on Saturday, 12 December from 8am to 11am under the Connaught Bridge. Residents are encouraged to wear masks at the clean-up.
