Rotary Club of uMhlanga brings back pride and confidence

Assisting the school is an ongoing project of the Rotary Club of uMhlanga and they are continuing to collect shoes for the 600 learners at the school.

THE Rotary club of uMhlanga (RCU) recently handed over 256 pairs of school shoes to learners at Natest School in Phoenix. Assisting the school is an ongoing project of the RCU and they are continuing to collect donations to give new school shoes to the remainder of the school’s 600 learners.

Speaking to the Northglen News, Vanessa Champion, Community Director for the Rotary Club of uMhlanga said that last year in December the organisation partnered with SPAR and Bata Shoes in a campaign aimed at collecting school shoes. Through the initiative, anyone who spent R500 or more received a voucher to purchase a pair of shoes for just R40.

“We put boxes up at the Mount Edgecombe KwikSpar, Ridge KwikSpar and mainly at the Glenore KwikSpar. With the help of James at the Glenore Kwikspar, we were able to collect close to three quarters of the shoes. It was so kind of the community to assist us as well,” said Champion.

She added the Rotary Interact Club of Tongaat collected R800 which allowed RCU to purchase 20 more pairs of school shoes.

“We noticed that there were mainly boys shoes and Natest Primary caters for both boys and girls. One of our members, Sandy Smith, has a daughter who is a Rotarian at the Rotary club of Broadstairs in the UK and they gave us R5 000. With this windfall we managed to purchase girls shoes from Pep Stores, at a discounted price,” she said.

Rajendra Thilakdhar, school principal said: “Most of our learners come from underprivileged backgrounds. This donation of school shoes will go a long way in inspiring our pupils to come to school, in a full school uniform looking confident and well dressed. The gesture will show our pupils that there are people who care and want to inspire them with hope and are willing to help them.”

Champion thanked the Glenore, Mount Edgecombe and The Ridge Kwikspar for taking part in the campaign. For more information or to donate a pair of shoes to the cause, contact Vanessa on 072 744 3140 or email: champion.vanessa58@gmail.com.
