Judy serves up an ace as she heads to Veteran World Champs

Judy Goss will be competing in the 60 to 65 year age group at the ITF World Veterans Tennis championships in Croatia later this year.

LOCAL resident, Judy Goss has been selected to represent South Africa at the ITF World Veterans Tennis championships in Umag (Croatia) in July this year.

Goss will be competing in the 60 to 65 year age group and will be playing in the tournament that will see 20 other countries competing at the global event.

“It is a great honor to be chosen to represent SA and it’s a goal I’ve been working toward. Last year I won the singles and doubles tournament in KZN in my age group so I knew I would be knocking on the door for national selection. I’ve taken the attitude to keep plugging away and working hard for a senior call-up.

“It has taken a lot of determination to get to this point and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead. The champs will be played on a clay court in Croatia so it’s going to be a tough challenge. I know it’s going to be very competitive but I want to enjoy the experience. Covid-19 may have the final say on whether the tournament will go ahead but I’m hoping for the best,” she said.

Goss who plays her tennis at the Glenashley Tennis Club praised her coach, Howard Saul, whose helped her immensely.

The La Lucia resident, who is a veteran of 12 Comrades Marathons, took up tennis after hanging up her long distance running shoes.

“I played tennis as a youngster and it was always something to put on my bucket list as I got older. But once I hung up my long distance shoes I decided to give tennis a more serious go. Let me tell you it’s really tough, you need a lot of practice and to put in the hours to improve as a player,” she said.
