The suspect is due to appear the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

GREENWOOD Park police detectives arrested a man who is linked to the murder of an Avoca woman. After his arrest, he revealed the location of the body of a 15-year-old girl.

The 28-year-old suspect, who was hiding in an informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg, was found asleep with his girlfriend at the time of his arrest.

According to provincial SAPS spokesperson, colonel Thembeka Mbele, the suspect is linked to a murder case from 2020.

“In January last year, Greenwood Park SAPS discovered the body of a 48-year-old woman who, with a towel in her mouth, was strangled to death. The deceased was identified as Ntombifuthi Regina Chivambu. It was later established that a vehicle parked at the premises on Granite Avenue (Avoca Hills) was also missing. Charges of murder and theft of a motor vehicle were opened for investigation at Greenwood Park SAPS,” Mbele said.

Following his arrest, the suspect led police to the Mkhunya area in Highflats (KZN south coast) where he dumped the body of a 15-year-old girl that he was last seen with.

“The human remains, suspected to be that of the kidnapped girl, were found in a school pit toilet in the Highflats area. The school has been closed for more than two years. The body was recovered with the assistance of the Port Shepstone Search and Rescue Unit and the Durban K9 Unit. An inquest docket was opened at Highflats SAPS,” she said.
