Project to widen Old North Coast Road begins

The project, which has already begun, is expected to take three years to complete.

A PLANNED upgrade to widen a portion of Old North Coast Road has been welcomed by Ward 110 councillor Aamir Abdul.

The project, which has already begun, is expected to take three years to complete.

Currently, from the traffic lights on Chris Hani Road up to the N2 bridge, the road is one lane in either direction.

“The widening and upgrade would entail the road being expanded into two lanes in either direction. This is a positive move as it will help with the traffic congestion felt by the businesses in Glen Anil and residents, as well as motorists using this route to move between the N2 freeway and the R102. This area, which is partially industrial, has seen the addition of new industrial parks in the last few years.

“That, coupled with the roadworks on major arterial routes, has meant that the increase in traffic congestion overall has worsened in the area. Most of the businesses and residents are in support of the project, and I can only see this as improving traffic flow. Residents would notice that work has already begun near Columbine Place and JT Ross Industrial Park,” he said.

Glen Anil resident and chairman of Greenwood Park CPF Subforum 5, Sector 3, Avi Pillay, also welcomed the planned upgrade.

“As a motorist who uses this route to get in and out of the area, I do feel this will alleviate traffic congestion. I realise there was a meeting between the various stakeholders and companies responsible for the upgrade last week, but I would like a public meeting for the residents to see how the project rollout will take place,” he said.
