UPDATE: N3 Pinetown-bound blocked off in protest action now clearing
Traffic has been cleared after a gridlock kilometres in length on the N3 near the Pavilion.
DURBAN Metro Police has reassured motorists that traffic is back to normal as road blockages have been cleared. This is after a truck and multiple taxis allegedly blocked the N3 Pinetown-bound due to protest actions.
Around 07:00 on Friday morning (May 24), ALS Paramedics reported that multiple taxis had blocked the N3, severely affecting traffic.

“The N3, both Durban- and Pinetown-bound, near the Pavilion, has been blocked by taxis. SAPS are making their way to the scene, but the queues of traffic are already kilometres long,” said ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.
Jamieson also reported that there was another taxi blockage earlier in the Greyville area.
Responding to the incident, the KZN South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) spokesperson, Sifiso Shangase, said their organisation had nothing to do with the blockages as their operators were also victims of the blockages.
“We were also blocked from our routes during peak hours – we did not call any protest. The videos that are on social media do not show any taxis, but there is a truck,” he said.
Traffic was cleared shortly after the Provincial Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, flew into the scene with a helicopter to assess the situation.
Jamieson has also reported that the roads, such as the M13 and M7, were clearing as traffic was flowing normally.
