ALS Paramedics arrived at the scene in Durban North just after 18:00 to find the man already rescued from the sea.

CPR and resuscitation efforts were already underway by bystanders and the public.

“Paramedics arrived on scene to find that a male believed to be in his fifties had been rescued from the ocean and CPR was in progress by bystanders and lifesavers,” said ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson.

“Advanced Life Support Paramedics took over the resuscitation attempt, however after some time the patient showed no response and the patient was declared deceased on the scene,” he added.

It is unknown how the man drowned. SAPS will investigate further.
