Search continues for missing teen presumed drowned in Umgeni River

The 13-year-old went swimming with a group of five friends on Monday morning.

THE search for a 13-year-old boy, presumed to have drowned while swimming in the Umgeni River, is expected to resume this morning.

Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said they were contacted by the family of the youngster.

“His family contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) on Monday (February 13) afternoon requesting assistance to locate his body after he drowned while swimming with friends yesterday.

“It was established that he was swimming with approximately five friends in the Umgeni River at approximately 10:00 on Monday when he experienced difficulty and disappeared underwater. His friends fled and sought assistance from the teenager’s family and residents of the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in Clare Estate,” he said.

Balram said the search operations using a helicopter were called off yesterday due to inclement weather and that search operations would resume today.
