Cornubia shooting leaves one dead

Fifteen spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.

ONE person was left dead following a shoot-out in Cornubia this morning.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received multiple calls from residents of a housing complex in the area requesting assistance at the scene.

“When officers arrived, they discovered a body of a man in the yard. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died before first responders could arrive,” said Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram.

“According to witnesses, two men were seen pursuing the deceased on foot and firing shots in his direction. The man entered a yard in an attempt to evade his assassins,” said Balram.

A woman and her two-year-old child escaped injury after they drove into the path of the gunfire.

She was exiting her property with her son in the passenger seat when the gunmen fired shots at her vehicle.

“They caught up with the deceased and shot him multiple times before they fled on foot,” added Balram.

Verulam SAPS arrived on scene and will continue with the necessary investigations.
