Fire at Sim Place Settlement claims 50-odd shacks

The fire was swiftly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

ABOUT 50 shacks caught alight when a fire broke out at Sim Place Settlement this morning.

Ward councillor for the area, Bobby Maharajh, said that fortunately, nobody was hurt.

“While it is sad that about 50 homes have been lost, we are fortunate that nobody was hurt. I have notified disaster management who will be out to assess the situation,” he said.

He added that the fire started at about 06:00, and a power surge is a possible cause.

The rubble after the fire was contained.

“It is believed that when the power came back on this morning after load-shedding, it caused a surge and one of the appliances caught alight. This has not been confirmed yet,” said Maharajh.

He said the Durban North Fire Department responded swiftly and contained the fire, which only affected shacks in the middle of the settlement.

“Although we have provided talks about fire hazards and safety, the turnout has been poor, but we will keep trying and keep providing education to this community in this regard,” he said.
