To commemorate World Cancer Day, which takes place annually on February 4, CANSA Durban and Pick n Pay Hyper By The Sea in Durban North have teamed up to host the event and are inviting locals to support the initiative on Saturday, February 1.
Speaking to Northglen News about the event, Natasha Brown, KZN sustainability co-ordinator for CANSA Durban, said supporting events such as this meant getting closer to a cancer-free society.
“There will be a short programme before the start which will explain the significance of World Cancer Day and what it entails. We will also provide information on CANSA as an organisation and what we do,” said Brown.
The talk starts at 8:15 followed by the walk which starts at 8:30. Supporters will walk from Pick n Pay into the residential areas, along Kenneth Kaunda Road and back to Pick n Pay.
“The theme for World Cancer Day is United By Unique. Every experience with cancer is unique and requires the work of all to create a world where we look beyond the disease and see the person before we see the patient,” she said.
United By Unique is a three-year campaign aiming to showcase real stories with unique perspectives which begins this year and ends in 2027. In 2025, individuals from all walks of life will be invited to share their journey and experiences.
In 2026 these stories will be used to transform minds and be utilised as powerful advocacy tools.
The aim is to influence policymakers, healthcare providers and the broader public. Finally, 2027 is when the stories shared will drive action and ensure that the progress made is longlasting.
“Every person’s experience is one-of-a-kind but nobody is alone. Let’s show solidarity in the fight against cancer by uniting and taking part in the World Cancer Day 5km Run/Walk. Your support helps us with vital care of cancer patients and their families. Together we can make a big impact,” added Brown.
Tickets cost R50 and can be purchased via Quicket. Every participant gets a pair of CANSA shoe laces.
