One killed in M4 head-on collision

Two occupants in one of the vehicles involved were severely entrapped in the wreckage and had sustained critical injuries.

ONE person has been killed in a crash on the M4 Ruth First Highway on Friday morning (April 17).

The incident involved two vehicles on the northbound side near the Swapo Road (Broadway) off-ramp.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to a head-on collision just after 05:00.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as the two badly damaged vehicles obstructed the road. Both vehicles had two occupants each who had all sustained injuries. Two occupants in the light motor vehicle were found severely entrapped in the wreckage with critical injuries.

“The passenger, a female believed to be in her twenties, had sustained multiple injuries and unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for her and she was declared deceased on scene. The driver had sustained critical injuries and once stabilised on the scene was transported to a nearby hospital,” he said.

Jamieson added that two occupants in the second vehicle sustained moderate injuries.

He added the events leading up to the crash are unknown however Durban North SAPS were in attendance.
