THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed they have purchased a property on 7 Sandringham Court in Ward 35 to accommodate a stormwater attenuation facility.

This was revealed at a recent special council meeting where Mayor Cyril Xaba said the facility is designed to manage peak rainfall flows and to address flooding risks and drainage capacity constraints downstream of Herrwood Drive.

In addition, the City said a 66m² sewer and drainage servitude will be registered over 9 Sandringham Court.

Ward councillor Bradley Singh welcomed the news of the plan, saying it would help protect homes from flooding, which has happened in the past.

“This is going to help protect residents’ properties in the long run. It is a much-needed project as the floods have shown that the flow of water coming down from Herrwood Drive is far too much. The attenuation facility is designed to capture excess surface water runoff during heavy rainfall and release it at a controlled rate.

“When Herrwood Drive was initially built, it was higher up than other areas but then we have more development where other new properties were built higher than that, affecting the table of water. This is a way for the City to prevent the drainage systems from being overwhelmed and mitigates downstream flooding. The infrastructure in the area needs to be upgraded,” he said.

No time frame has been given to when development will start for the attenuation facility.
