OUR Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School’s hockey team made history when they were crowned champions at the grand finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge at the weekend.

Prior to the start of the tournament the Durban North school had been the most consistent team in the history of the competition, having earned fifth place in their five previous excursions in 2011, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024.

Fatima were one of 10 regional winners taking part in the finals of the competition.

The competition took place at St Mary’s DSG and saw Fatima (the Durban North regional winner) take on St John’s Diocesan School for Girls (PMB Central Regional) in the final game.

Fatima won the final 1-0 and were solid in their overall game plan and play, especially in defence.

Matthew Smith was full of praise for his team’s performance.

“Making history is something incredibly special, not just for this group of players, but for our entire school community. This is our first time winning this tournament which is such a huge achievement that these girls will always be remembered for. They have set a new benchmark and shown what can be achieved through hard work, commitment and dedication.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the way the team performed throughout the tournament. While the results were outstanding, what impressed me most was their determination not to give up in the face adversity. They showed resilience under pressure, played for each other, and represented Our Lady of Fatima with humility and pride. Every player contributed to our success, and the way they supported one another on and off the field was exceptional,” he said.
