The first record of the initiative dates to 2011, when it was known as the Sponsored Sandwich Marathon. Learners were sponsored per sandwich, with the food donated to less fortunate schools.
The event was initially competitive, with learners competing to make the most sandwiches and raise the most money. The competitive element was dropped a few years ago, shifting the focus to service and giving. Today, Grade Four to Grade Seven classes each spend 30 minutes making sandwiches during the school day.
Most of this year’s sandwiches were donated to Crossroads, which supports poverty alleviation, education, food security, healthcare and community development.

Other recipients included Makabongwe Pre-School near Durban’s taxi rank, City of Faith Pre-school and the ReStory Foundation.
“The school would like to thank parents for donating bread, peanut butter and jam, which made the initiative possible,” said Chelsea Preparatory School principal Grant Maartens.

What began as a sponsored challenge has grown into a valued tradition of service, with learners showing how a simple sandwich can make a meaningful difference.
