DANVILLE Park Girls’ High School claimed their third title in the final of the Durban North Regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Fast 5s Challenge on the weekend.

The event was hosted by Ashton International College on Saturday, September 12.

The defending champs met one time regional winner and fellow Durban North school, Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School (DSC) in the regional final where the ‘Danville Diamonds’ sparkled.

The team won the final 13-10, topped the log after their seven games, and were victorious in all of the round robin games.

Captain of Danville’s Fast 5s team Aimee Lovemore was full of praise for her charges.

“Although it was a tough day playing lots of netball, we worked hard as a team because we all wanted to win it again. I felt really proud and happy after winning. I think our team just has such a special bond with one another. We all genuinely enjoy playing with each other and spending time off court.

“Everyone brings something different to the team but at the end of the day we trust everyone to get their job done. We are definitely a team with a lot of jokes but at the end of the day we will stick together and encourage each other,” she said.

Guided by Baby Proteas coach, Precious Mthembu, Danville have featured in all but one of the regional finals.

Our Lady of Fatima fought for their place in the final after losing their round robin game to hosts Ashton and then a narrow defeat by Danville, in their second fixture.

Thereafter however, they refocused, claiming victory in all of their remaining matches.

Fatima beat Ashton in the second semi-final 15-10 whereas Danville beat Curro Salt Rock 19-5.

Their captain, Zoey Quigley, reflected on the team’s progress in the tournament.

“The team is very young and new and after we lost the first two games we were told to just carry on pushing and try our best and that is exactly what we did. I was super proud of my team and how hard they pushed against such strong teams to end up only narrowly losing in the final,” she said. “The amazing thing is the team is made of players from Grade Nine, 10 and 11 so I didn’t know how we were going to click, but that is the beauty of netball and Our Lady of Fatima.
