Umhlanga resident makes history at Kingsmead
Krystl Rangiah is the first woman to be appointed as the Stadium and Events Manager of Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.
UMHLANGA resident Krystl Rangiah has made history by becoming the first woman to be appointed as the Stadium and Events Manager of Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in its 103-year history.
Originally from Hayfields in Pietermaritzburg, cricket has always been a part of Rangiah’s life for as long as she can remember.
The 38-year-old’s responsibilities will include overseeing the stadium and events portfolio and ensuring that match days and other major events hosted at Kingsmead continue to provide a high-quality experience for players, supporters, partners and other stakeholders.
Making history
Speaking on her appointment, Rangiah said she was honoured to take up the role.
Rangiah started as a receptionist and a club administrator at the City Oval in Pietermaritzburg and then within a year was a creditor’s clerk at Kingsmead.
From a creditor’s clerk, Rangiah was then the brand and communications manager for the past 11 years for Kingsmead.
“I’m honoured. It is an absolute privilege to be a part of an iconic stadium steeped in cricketing history. I’m also grateful to our visionary CEO (Mr) Heinrich Strydom. It speaks volumes of his trust and belief to appoint a lady in a traditionally man’s role,” she said. “I’m excited to build on the legacy of Kingsmead as a premium sporting destination on the global stage.”
Earliest memories
Cricket has always been something Rangiah has been ‘obsessed’ with.
Whether it was watching games live at the stadium in primary school or getting up early to watch the Proteas on tours in Australia, she never missed a ball.
“My earliest memory I have is sitting in the West Stand at Kingsmead, I must have been around 10 years old and I remember telling my mother that I would work here one day. The Boxing Day Test match was my favourite and I was so excited to see my favourite cricketer Mark Boucher. You could say I was obsessed with the game but it was a passion of mine even though I couldn’t catch a ball. I hope to create a platform in my new role and show the younger generation that you can dream big and that anything is possible. Your circumstances and background don’t dictate your future,” she said.
