ROOSEVELT PARK – Local bowling club hosts a flavour-filled day of B20 bowls.
What do you get when you combine lawn bowls, cricket and a potjiekos?
A good time, obviously.
The Roosevelt Park Bowling Club held its annual Alan Shrimpling Memorial Potjiekos on Heritage Day, 24 September.
The event started with a B20 bowls tournament.
This featured a new format of bowls that incorporates landing a bowl on a marked mat to score runs and bowling at wickets to deduct runs from your opponents.

Club members were split into a South Africa and rest of the world teams based on their country of birth.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world was far too good and won 143–66.
The event then moved from the greens to the lapa where everyone enjoyed drinks while waiting for the excellent potjiekos chefs to prepare perfect meals.
This included all sorts of dishes ranging from chicken curry to springbok, biltong, gemsbok, lamb, and steak and kidney.
Mouths were watering by the time judges Lyn Botha and Keith van der Linde did their tasting and allowed the bowlers to dig in.

In the words of club chairperson, Roy Putter, all the dishes were excellent and every chef was a winner.
But bragging rights were on the line, and the judges could not agree which dish was better than the rest.
They decided that Chris Botha would share the trophy (an actual potjie pot trophy) for his lamb and dumpling dish with Sharon Brown and Corienne Shrimpling for their Argentinean beef potjie.
“The party carried on in the bar long afterwards,” said Putter.
“Overall the event was fantastic. The camaraderie between everyone was special, and everyone enjoyed the cricket.”
The club will host its annual new season opening day on 13 October.
Putter encouraged anyone interested to play a game of bowls, enjoy a boerewors roll and live music from Springbok bowler, Jason Evans.
