ICYMI: SA guitarist Jethro Butow dies in Fairland car accident

FAIRLAND – Details of Butow's accident are still unclear.

South African guitarist Jethro Butow dies in a car accident.

It’s yet another Monday morning of sadness as South Africans learn that the legendary South African guitarist Jethro Butow passed on on the evening of 19 January. Fairland Police Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Clive de Freitas confirmed that Butow did pass on but stated that the details of the incident are still unknown.

Fans and friends have turned to South African Rock Hall of Fame inductee’s Facebook page to pay their respects to the star guitarist and share their memories of them with them over the years. Here is what a few of them posted on Butow’s Facebook wall:

KIERAN RENNIE: I’ve been so very blessed to have shared the stage with some of South Africa’s finest musicians. Guys and girls who make me look like a total busker. But, who made me feel like I should work harder. And get better.
In an especially surreal moment, while performing in Solitary Souls with Morné Toua and Dio Santos, I’m about to hack my way through a guitar solo for Have I Told You Lately, and a stab of terrifying inspiration and almost out of body disbelief spikes through me.

TONIA SCHONKEN: What a sad loss. I first met Jethro in Hermanus 46 years ago when he played with Free Ride at the Riviera Hotel….he was truly a legend! Hard to imagine a world without him. Condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed. RIP Jethro.

LOUISE THOMAS with GEOFF SMITH: I’m shocked at your passing Jethro Butow make some noise in heaven ….. You were a legend…
