Close to 4 000 people attended the event, which featured pipe band competitions, Highland dancing, carnival games, market stalls, food vendors, a tea garden and alumni sporting events.

One of the oldest traditions on the school’s calendar, the Highland Gathering has grown from a pipe band and dancing competition into a vibrant community festival while remaining true to its roots.

This year, 22 pipe bands took part, with about 150 pipers and 150 drummers performing throughout the day. They were joined by 34 Highland dancers whose colourful performances added to the festive atmosphere.

According to Jenny Myburgh, the school’s marketing assistant, the event is about far more than entertainment. “The Highland Gathering is a celebration of community. It brings together pupils, parents, staff, alumni, sponsors and visitors from the wider community for a day of fun, connection and shared experiences,” she said.

A highlight of the day was the Massed Bands performance, which saw more than 300 pipers and drummers march onto the field and perform together.

“As the music echoed across the grounds, families gathered around the arena, alumni paused to watch, young children stood in awe, and former pupils reflected on their own days at the college.”

The event also relies heavily on volunteers. Learners in grades 10, 11 and 12 assisted throughout the day, helping in the tea garden, carnival area and at entrance gates.

For De La Salle Holy Cross College, the Highland Gathering remains a reflection of its commitment to community, service and tradition, while continuing to strengthen connections between current families, alumni and residents from across Johannesburg.
