Freedom Day Celebration in Sophiatown
Marking the 20th anniversary of Freedom Day, the annual Sophiatown Encounters Series opens on 28 April with the ‘Route to Freedom’ guided walking tour of this historic suburb, followed by a picnic in the garden of the historic 1930s original Sophiatown home of A B Xuma; and then live jazz performances by Neo Lekela and his Quartet comprising Mvuzo Dimba, Piano; Sipho Hlatshwayo, Bass; and Gore Makgatle on Drums. Presenting their current work ‘Silence’, it relays the nature of being unheard.
There will also be a screening of the feature film ‘Drum’ which relays part of the story of Sophiatown’s destruction under apartheid in the 1950s.
The walking tour starts at 12pm with Jazz Encounters at 4pm and 6pm at R70 per set.
