104 years old and loving life
NORTHCLIFF – Olive Sutton turns 104 and celebrates with close family and friends.
Olive Sutton celebrated turning 104 years old on 16 October with her brother and close friends.
Originally from the Transkei, in the small town of Maclear, Sutton was the eldest daughter of seven. When her mother passed away she was subsequently forced to leave school at the tender age of 13 to help look after her siblings and tend to the household chores. The family later then moved to a farm in the Transvaal.
“My hobbies became baking and cooking because we lived on a farm, and I was expected to be a young homemaker,” said Sutton.
After many years of having looked after her family, Olive decided to look after herself for a change and catered to her desire to travel. She visited places such as Israel, London, Italy and the Isle of Capri, to name a few.
“The longevity of my life is all through God,” she said.
Olive is currently residing at Peace Haven Home in Northcliff, which is run by Cynthia Crouch, who has been running the haven for the past 18 years.
“I started this haven after having seen one in the area that inspired me to open up my own where I could help the elderly,” said Crouch.
The haven aims to be a homely environment rather than an institution.
To celebrate her birthday, Olive was joined by her 96-year-old brother, Stanley Hack and fellow guests at the Peace Haven Home.
