GALLERY: Karla and Nika set the stage alight
NORTHCLIFF – The captivating dance routines of two sisters take them overseas.
In July Karla (17) and sister Nika Wessels (7) showed off their amazing dance talents in the United States of America.
The two ambitious dancers were part of a South African dance team called Dance International. The competition took place at the American Dance Awards in Hollywood, Florida.
The dancers, who reside in Northcliff, both did exceptionally well. Karla received three gold medals for her acrobatic dance and open section dances, while Nika received two gold medals for her acrobatic and modern sections.
Nika also received an award for her perfect leap while Karla received an All Star Award for her spots (successive walkovers). Nika was the overall winner of the primary section.
The girls are both members of J&C Dance Creation where Nika started dancing at the age of four. She received the highest overall score for a solo ages 12 and under at the competition.
Karla started off by doing purely acrobatics until she thought to incorporate that with dance. Now she is currently the SA champion acrobat on an elite level from ages 16 and over.
Jackie McGinn, one of the dance teachers at J&C Dance Creation, based in Weltevreden Park, noted how talented the girls are.
“Karla has great abilities, she could make a big success of herself as she is a hugely focused and determined,” said McGinn.
She also praised Karla’s talented seven-year-old sister, Nika, saying that she has far surpassed children in her age group and that if she continues she could be a sensational dancer.
Melanie Wessels, the girls’ mother is amazed at her daughters’ raw and beautiful talent.
“I’m very proud of them, they are both such accomplished dancers,” said Wessels.
As costs to take both girls overseas are high, Wessels would appreciate contributions toward their travel overseas.
Both girls qualified to represent SA again next year July.This time they will be heading to New York City.
