Can you spell money?
BLAIRGOWRIE – The pupils of Blairgowrie Primary School have walked away with prizes for their spelling capabilities.
The winners of the Blairgowrie Primary School spellathon reaped great rewards from their ability to spell, when they received their cash prizes.
The spellathon is an annual fundraiser organised by the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The spellathon was held in March but the prizes were awarded to the winners on 15 April after all the donated money had been collected.
Parents, businesses and the rest of the community contribute to this event by sponsoring pupils per the number of words they spell correctly. All the pupils from grade R to 7 participated. The Grade Rs participated in a slightly different competition, the Shapeathon, where they identify shapes.
A record amount of R100 000 was collected. This money will go towards a revamp of the school’s bathrooms. Chairperson of the PTA, Monique McKellar-Basset said, “Our goal for fundraising this year was set at R370 000 and this puts us at a huge advantage very early in the year. Our school is very committed to improving our facilities and every cent raised this year goes towards maintaining and improving the bathrooms throughout the school.”
Prizes were awarded to the children who brought in the highest amount of money with their spelling ability. In first place was Jake Frankel in Grade 7, who won R5 000. Second place, Matthew Calitz in Grade 1 took home R2 000 and in third place, Joshua Keatly in Grade 1 won R500.
