Succulents galore at autumn show

EMMARENTIA - The Johannesburg Succulent Society displayed different types of succulents at their autumn show.

The Johannesburg Succulent Society held their annual autumn show at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. All types of succulents were on display and some were so impressive that they won bragging rights for their owners after being judged.

Chairperson of the Johannesburg Succulent Society, Willem van Greunen said that they hold two shows per year. He said it was a great way to promote indigenous plants and pointed out that succulents were easy to take care of as they required very little water.

The show featured many of South Africa’s beautiful succulents, both rare and common, as well as succulents from Madagascar, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Angola and Zimbabwe.

“The majority of succulent plants are available in South Africa and we aim to educate the public on the succulent plants and flowers,” Van Greunen noted.

He explained that succulent plants were nice to collect as they were ornamental and added that their show attracted people from all over Joburg.

“A lot of people who visit our show, come to find out the names of their plants as there are so many different types of succulents and the owners are intrigued as to what they are called,” Van Greunen said.

He urged residents who were interested in succulent plants to come and join their meetings on the first Wednesday of every month at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.

First time visitor Livandzu Themba said that she enjoyed visiting the show as she learned many things she did not know about succulents.

“It’s interesting to learn how to take care of succulents and I found the plants on display impressive. Even though it is my first time here I will definitely be coming back,” she said.
