Art, expression and community collide at The Happening

From bold fashion to live performances, The Happening brought creativity to life in the heart of Melville.

The Happening took over 7th Street in Melville on March 28, transforming the street into a vibrant celebration of creativity, community and self-expression.

Inspired by events such as AfrikaBurn, The Happening was not just an art lover’s dream, it was a space for those who find beauty in the unconventional.

The event was driven by volunteers and local creatives, embodying the spirit of collaboration that defines the neighbourhood.

As Melville Business Association member Cobi Meyer-Domingo put it, “Today is where people come together to create something special artists, performers and residents all contributing their time.”

In many ways, the event mirrored Melville itself. Its eclectic nature brought together people from different backgrounds, creating a shared space where art and joy could be experienced freely and fully.

Attendees became part of the spectacle, confidently strutting along 7th Street in bold and imaginative outfits not to stand out, but to belong to the living artwork unfolding around them.

With free entry, visitors were invited to experience Melville differently.

The usually busy street was transformed into a pedestrian-friendly festival space, with restaurants and venues offering unique artistic elements from open mic performances to burlesque shows and family-friendly entertainment.

The Happening was more than an event; it was a reminder of what can be created when a community comes together to celebrate creativity in all its forms.
