Emmarentia-Greenside security initiative

Resident feel hiding behind high walls is not always the best security solution.

This is what the Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA) and Greenside Residents Association (GRA) members are trying to communicate through a new security initiative, with the assistance of Community Active Protection (CAP). The ERA and GRA have formed a Joint Safety & Security Committee in reaction to the string of extensive criminal activities that have occurred in the two suburbs recently.

CAP director, Mark van Jaarsveld said, “We will be implementing a community owned initiative which aims to partner with the police and accredited security companies to prevent specifically violent crimes and other crimes.”

As a result, they are reaching out to community members to come on board in creating a safer environment for themselves.Committee member, Tineke Wulffers said the initiative wishes to engage the community and encourage interaction between neighbours in order to create a much more cohesive community. “We are a much more diverse community now, unlike when we grew up. While on the outside we might look diverse, we all have things in common. We don’t know how much we have in common because we don’t know our neighbours,” said Wulffers. The ERA and GRA together with CAP are hoping to bridge the gap that home based-security may leave. open.
