Winter hibernation over

Emmarentia resident Alex Roberts and partner Jane Swarbreck finished 11th overall in the Belloord Canoe Klip River Challenge.

The race was hosted by the Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted on 18 August. Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union said the 22km race from Daleside through Henley on Klip to Meyerton, was a perfect re-introduction to river races for those paddlers who have been hibernating throughout winter.

“With the major national and most popular race on the calendar, the Hansa Fish River Marathon, scheduled to take place in just six weeks time in Cradock in the Eastern Cape, the race was the biggest turnout this year with over 100 boats finishing,” she said.

Roberts and Swarbreck, a triathlete who is very fit and participates in multiple sporting events enjoyed their try out at the race, finishing as the first mixed double K2 in a time of 1 hour 33 minutes, in 11th place overall. The pair are both members of the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club at Emmarentia Dam.
