No expropriation along Empire-Perth… yet
JOBURG - The City of Johannesburg says they will try by all means to avoid expropriation during the densification process along the Empire-Perth Development Corridor.
The City of Johannesburg says expropriation of private property will be their last resort in the densification developments set to take place around the Empire-Perth Development Corridor.
Speaking at the third round of the scheduled public meetings, development planning and facilitation director Herman Pienaar said the city would exhaust all avenues to avoid any drastic measurements.
Urban designer and planner Paul Hanger maintained that expropriation was not in their plans.
“There are no fixed plans or any proposal. It’s not part of the strategy and it never was actually,” Hanger informed.
Hanger revealed that the framework for the proposed developments extends to 2040, giving affected property owners until that time to establish the fate of their property.
In his presentation, Hanger said property owners could weigh their options of either approaching developers or to receive funds from the various agents and develop their own property.
It cannot be guaranteed whether the developments would be completed by 2040, however, densification is certainly set to take place.
