Northcliff Investor’s Club meet again

KELLAND - Senior Economist of Old Mutual Johann Els advises Northcliff investors.

The Northcliff Investor’s Club met again at Benvenuto Conference Centre and Hotel in Kelland on 11 March for guest speaker’s Johann Els presentation on ‘the outlook for 2014.’

A senior cconomist at Old Mutual, Els covered the state of the local and international economy and showed that there is still value to be gained in equity investments at home and abroad. According to Els, the early signs of recovery are becoming clearer in the American economy but the European economy will still lag for a while.

On the subject of property, cash and equity, Els believes local and offshore markets are still expected to grow at around 5 per cent in above inflation over the next two to three years while returns in property and cash do not look as good and are expected to generate returns below inflation.

When asked what he felt about the rand, he explained that the rand should continue to devalue against the currencies of our major trading partners over time due to the relative inefficiency of our economy versus theirs.

Tommy Ferreira of PSG Northcliff and co-founder of the Northcliff Investor’s Club then discussed issues to be kept in mind when appointing a financial advisor to assist you in your planning. These included making sure they are registered with the Financial Services Board and knowing what you will be paying as well as what you expect to get in return for these fees.

Ferreira also discussed various pyramid schemes and other get-rich-quick schemes that frequently do the rounds and catch unsuspecting investors due to their own ignorance or greed.

He recommended that one makes sure that they are dealing with a recognised organisation with proper accreditation and qualifications when entrusting your hard-earned life savings to them.

The next Northcliff Investor’s Club meeting will be held at Benvenuto on 20 May.
